“The perfect comedy for our times” (Time Out) and the Cannes Film Festival 2022 Palme d'Or winner.
Ruben Östlund made it two Palmes d’Or from his last two films at Cannes with this darkly hilarious satire of celebrity culture, where beauty is the main form of currency. Hunky cologne model Carl and his influencer girlfriend Yaya hit the big time when they are invited on a luxury cruise. Aboard we will find a selection of rich trash: Russian oligarchs, arms dealers, a fertiliser baron, all under the command of an alcoholic Marxist captain (of course played by Woody Harrelson). It will all end badly – or at least let’s hope so – leaving the survivors stranded on a desert island and fighting for survival.
“a wildly funny Lord of the Flies for the era of the super-rich … plays like Buñuel by way of the Farrelly brothers. A film that really goes there–the second half is positively spattered in bodily fluids–it’s hardly subtle, but it’s a wild ride.” (Time Out)
“a nasty hoot … a rollicking time” (London Evening Standard)
“There are myriad moments of wicked, clever brilliance in Östlund’s film—at its piercing best, his writing has an astounding fluency, shifting between classes and types with frightful dexterity.” (Vanity Fair)
This screening is part of the Adelaide Film Festival Curate Your Own Festival program. Unique in Australia, Curate Your Own Festival builds screen culture in regional towns by developing local curatorial skills. Every Festival, AFF invites four emerging regional curators to spend four days at the Festival to select films to take back to their town. Find out more here.
