Who takes care of the emotionally scarred survivors of an atrocity after everyone else moves on? This sobering and insightful documentary bears witness to trauma's harrowing effects and the seductive pull of alternative facts — where even the unlikeliest of people can be ensnared.

For many years after the Port Arthur massacre and the trail of unimaginable devastation that left 35 locals and tourists dead, information officer Wendy Scurr battled for proper support for herself and the fellow first responders who saved innumerable lives in the bloody aftermath.

As the politicians of the day steadfastly refused to open a public enquiry, conspiracy theories took hold in the vacuum that followed, as Wendy and others began to question what little was made available by the official narrative.

Years later, emerging documentary filmmaker Jared Nicholson met Wendy, trying to understand how survivors are reshaped by such monstrosity. When her understandable paranoia began to bleed into his own investigation, reopening old wounds of his own, Jared reached out to Ithaka (2021) filmmaker Ben Lawrence for a fresh perspective on the quagmire surrounding the unbearable tragedy.

More than a documentary, the astonishing Aftermath is a reckoning with truth itself.

Fatherland

Fatherland

A luminous exploration of one of Germany’s greatest authors captured in a brief vignette - Thomas Mann’s 1948 return to Germany from exile in America. His much-anticipated pronouncement on what should be the prevailing principles for the now divided Germany is contrasted to the relationship with his despairing son, Karl. As the daughter of Mann and sister of Karl, Sandra Hüller is magnificent - as is all the cast.

Pressure

Pressure

As D-Day nears, Eisenhower (Brendan Fraser) must trust Scottish meteorologist James Stagg (Andrew Scott), whose forecast contradicts Allied consensus. Based on David Haig's play, Pressure turns the 72 hours before the invasion into a tense chamber piece with the fate of the war resting on the weather.

Rose

Rose

Rendered in desolate black and white and unfolding like a folk tale, Rose follows a woman who fought disguised as a man during the Thirty Years' War. Seeking a life of her own in a remote Protestant village, she discovers peace harder won than war.

A Man of His Time

A Man of His Time

Set in World War 2 France during the early months of the German Occupation, Emmanuel Marre’s Cannes-winning screenplay grapples with the personal and the political at a moment of profound national upheaval. Anchored by Swann Arlaud’s gripping central performance, A Man of His Time is a sly, unsettling meditation on power and opportunism.
