AFF x JAFF 2024

In 2024, Adelaide Film Festival (AFF) partnered with Jogja NETPAC Asian Film Festival (JAFF) Indonesia and Mylab with the aim of nurturing the development of two projects.

The aim of this initiative with JAFF is for a major international collaboration that forms the basis for ongoing connectivity between Indonesia and Australia. The broad objective is to enhance cultural and creative connectivity between Indonesia and Australia through the art of cinema.

In 2024 AFF and JAFF also worked with MyLab, who assisted in relationship building between the selected Australian filmmakers and the Indonesian participating filmmakers at the newly established JAFF Market (3-5 December) at the 2024 JOGJA NETPAC Asian Film Festival (30 Nov – 7 Dec).

The initiative offered two Australian project teams with existing feature film or feature length documentary projects containing suitable Indonesian story or production elements the opportunity to engage in the inaugural JAFF Market with structured support from Mylab.

The two Australian projects selected collectively by AFF, JAFF Market and mylab are:

Sampai Mati (working title)

Director: Ben Golotta
Writer: Juli Sastrawan
Company: Repeater Productions (Australia)
Genre: Documentary

Sampai Mati follows the intertwined journeys of Australian survivors mourning lost loved ones and Balinese locals committed to community healing, revealing how love and resilience transform trauma into hope and renewal in the aftermath of the 2002 Bali bombings.

Raesita Grey

Director/ Writer: Katrina Irawati Graham
Producer: Ana Tiwary

Raesita Grey is a feminist horror story, exploring the relationship between two women, one who is dead and secretly longs for life, and one who is alive and secretly longs for death. Haunted by guilt over her husband’s death, pregnant Raesita Grey develops a deadly connection with a Kuntilanak, the most famous of Indonesian ghosts.

JAFF Market

The inaugural JAFF Market is the largest film market in Southeast Asia and a hub for the Indonesian film industry and stakeholders to connect. JAFF Market is a synergy of the industry, professionals, new talents, content makers, buyers, film institutions, press and media, and cinephiles.

The three-day JAFF Market demonstrated strong international appeal, drawing 6,723 attendee delegates from 18 territories. Industry activity buzzed across 151 exhibitor booths, generating 1,767 meetings and culminating in 61 memorandums of understanding and USD 1.2M in deals. The festival drew over 24,000 attendees, marking its highest turnout since launching in 2006.

Ben Golotta:

"The JAFF Future Project initiative, a collaborative effort between AFF, JAFF, and Mylab, was an incredibly nurturing experience. The team's meticulous support was remarkable - they expertly organized my meetings and strategically connected me with key industry professionals to propel my feature documentary forward. I arrived with limited industry knowledge and departed with an extensive network and the confidence to advance my project to its next critical stage.

This experience has fundamentally reshaped my perspective on regional filmmaking. I am now deeply convinced of the transformative power of co-production within the Asia/Pacific region, with a renewed commitment to cultivating and strengthening international collaborative relationships."

Katrina Irawati Graham:

"The JAFF Market was a brilliant, rich experience which allowed me, for the first time, to connect my work to Indonesian and other Asian producers. I went looking to secure an Indonesian co-producer and have had wonderful interest from people who understand what my project is - an Indonesian supernatural feminist horror with a global sensitivity. The Indonesian film scene is a vibrant ecosystem which grows more sophisticated and technologically capable every year.  The market itself, founded by some of Indonesia's top producers and directors, was run so well - especially being Indonesia's first ever market!"
