Hear me roar…
In 1966 Helen Reddy arrived in New York with her young daughter, a suitcase, and $230. When a promised record contract fails to materialise, she perseveres. Her friendship with legendary rock journalist Lillian Roxon, who becomes her closest confident, inspires her to write and sing the iconic song “I Am Woman” which becomes the anthem for the second wave feminist movement and galvanises a generation of women to fight for change. It also sparks an astounding career that results in 15 Top 40 hits. I Am Woman marks the dramatic feature debut of an outstanding new Australian talent in director Unjoo Moon, who drew her own inspiration from Reddy’s story. Add a star-making performance by Adelaide’s own (not to mention AFF poster-woman) Tilda Cobham-Hervey. And with cinematography by Oscar-winning Australian cinematographer, Dion Beebe (Memoirs of a Geisha, Chicago), it’s going to be a feast for the eyes as well as the ears. So sing it “…I am strong, I am invincible. I am….”
