The Adelaide Film Festival (AFF) is proud to present a suite of esteemed awards, recognizing excellence in screen storytelling. These awards celebrate the creativity, innovation, and impact of filmmakers from around the world.

An invited Jury selects the best film in the AFF Feature Fiction, Feature Documentary, Change Award and Shorts Award competition categories, and all audience members are encouraged to vote for their favourite films in the AFF Audience Awards.

Feature Fiction Award

AFF was the first Australian film festival to recognise international accomplishment through a juried prize for best feature fiction and documentary film. Our Competition Jury values idiosyncratic voices, bold storytelling, creative risk-taking and overall fabulous films.

Good One

17-year-old Sam joins her dad and his oldest friend on a three-day backpacking trip in the Catskills. While the two men quickly settle into a brotherly dynamic, airing grievances and mid-life crises, Sam observes as the thoughtful “good one”. Against the backdrop of the lush beauty of upstate New York, Sam struggles with her dad’s emotional limitations and slowly becomes disillusioned with her relationship with the two men.

The debut feature from director Sarra Tsorakidis follows artist Lena (Ilinca Hărnuț) as she recovers from a difficult break up. Commissioned to paint murals during the refurbishment of a luxury brutalist hotel in a Romanian forest, she discovers that the only way out of the woods is by going through them.

In the Belly of a Tiger

An elderly farmer and his family return home to their village after trying to make money in the city, only to find it destitute and ruled by exploitative employers and a hungry tiger. Both the greedy employers and the tiger are protected by the government, but only the death at the hands of one will provide compensation.

Gerrie flies home to Rotterdam, Netherlands to reluctantly reunite with his oddball son, Dick. Written and directed by Peter Hoogendoorn, Three Days of Fish is a witty father-son portrait that was presented in competition at Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

In 2020, AFF introduced the Change Award for positive social or environmental impact through cinema expressing a desire to live in new ways. The Change Award, sponsored by good.film and judged by a jury, celebrates the feature that best demonstrates these values.

Audience Awards

The AFF Audience Awards are voted for by film-goers, giving everyone who comes to the festival a chance to champion their favourite films. There are three Audience Awards, in categories for feature fiction, documentary and short film. All films in the festival are eligible and voting can be done in your account on the website or app.

The Don Dunstan Award

The Adelaide Film Festival Board proudly presents the Don Dunstan Award, recognising an exceptional individual who has made an outstanding contribution to Australian screen culture.

The Bettison & James Award

Administered by Adelaide Film Festival, this annual award provides $50,000 in recognition of an exemplary and inspiring lifelong contribution by an individual working in any field.
