“An exemplary sequel and a vital, informative companion piece.” (NY Times)

Ry Cooder’s 1997 album, in conjunction with Wim Wenders’ 1999 documentary, brought the rich Cubano tradition of son music to international attention. Leading international documentarian Lucy Walker (whose Wasteland screened at ADL Film Fest 2011) uses archival material to revisit the stories of luminary musicians such as Compay Segundo and Ibrahim Ferrer, giving us a stronger understanding of the social and historical roots of their music. She also provides a sense of what happened to these tremendous performers who we only discovered so late. It is an emotionally and physically moving record of music born out of irresistible vitality, and a bittersweet celebration of strong life force grappling with the ravages of time.
