The Ornithologist 18+

“Deliciously subversive and genuinely funny.” (Variety)
Things begin simply enough: Fernando is kayaking down the river studying birds. He is a man of science who denies any spiritual dimension to the physical world. However, in the hands of one of Portugal’s most renowned and transgressive surrealists, this journey is leading us into deeper and increasingly strange waters. With equal measures of religious allegory, homoerotic imagery and gently mystical symbolism, the film transforms itself into a thing of strange wonder. The forest and the people in it are haunted by all manner of ghosts, inner demons and ecstatic urges. Variety praised it as “deliciously subversive and genuinely funny” and it won the Best Director Award at the Locarno Film Festival.
