ADL Film Fest is thrilled to announce our Virtual Reality Competition in partnership with the Australian Film Television Radio School. This competition is in recognition of the burgeoning VR medium.

We invite the diverse, creative community of storytellers and technologists to submit inventive, independently produced works of fiction, documentary and interactive Virtual Reality projects for consideration.

The winning work will be selected by a jury of industry experts.

VR submissions for the 2017 festival program will open on Monday 29 May 2017 and close on Monday 3 July 2017. Submissions must be received at the ADL Film Fest office by the official closing date at 5:00pm.

ADL Film Fest accepts Virtual Reality films of all forms (drama, documentary, hybrid, experimental and animation) made in Australia and internationally. These can be any length or genre.

FAQs

How do I submit my VR film to Adelaide Film Festival?
To submit your VR film to Adelaide Film Festival:

  • Submit film details and payment via Film Festival Life, uploading a 2D screener of the film if you have one available
  • Send your 3D screener to info@adelaidefilmfestival.org with your six-digit submission confirmation code (ID 100XXX) in the subject line
  • Screeners can be in the form of a link to a 360° video file, app download package (.apk) or other installation package.
  • We prefer screeners to be viewable on Samsung Gear VR or Google Cardboard.

What formats are accepted?
Works must be recently produced, completed after September 2016.
We prefer VR submissions to be viewable on Samsung Gear VR or Google Cardboard.
We request that you provide a link to a 360° video file, app download package (.apk), or other installation package.
Additionally, we request that you provide a separate 2D version of the project via Film Festival Life’s online screener service.
Please make sure that links sent through do not expire prior to August 11 2017.

What languages are accepted?
Accepted language for submissions is English or original language with English subtitles.

When do VR submissions open and close?
VR submissions will open at 9am ACST, Friday 26 May 2017.
VR submissions will close at 5pm ACST, Monday 3 July 2017.
We do not accept late submissions.

How much does it cost to submit a VR film?
All films: AUD$40*
* excludes FilmFestivalLife fees and charges where applicable

What genres of VR films does ADL Film Fest accept for submission?
ADL Film Fest accepts VR films of all genres, including experimental films and animation. We do not accept VR works that are exclusively educational, scientific or for training or promotion, or music videos.

How do I know if my VR film is eligible for submission?
A film is not eligible for submission if it was completed before September 2016.
VR films are eligible if they have previously been exhibited or are available online.
ADL Film Fest reserves the right to program films that fall outside of the eligibility criteria under special circumstances.

I’ve got a work-in-progress/rough cut VR film. Can I submit it?
ADL Film Fest may agree to preview VR films that are not yet finished during the submission period, but will be finished in time for the festival. The VR film must be at picture lock stage. Work-in-progress VR films should only be submitted if ADL Film Fest has agreed to accept them. You must first send details of the status of the film to info@adelaidefilmfestival.org to then have your film approved for submission as a work-in-progress/rough cut.

How do I submit my VR film to ADL Film Fest?
All entries must be submitted via FilmFestivalLife.
Entry fees are not refunded if the film is not selected or is ineligible to screen at the festival.

What’s the selection process for submissions?
Festival programmers select and invite all films presented at ADL Film Fest. All entrants will be notified of the Festival’s programming decisions by email by 11 August 2017. Please notify ADL Film Fest if you change the contact email address provided when submitting your film.
ADL Film Fest’s selection decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into. We do not provide critical analysis or feedback.
If your VR film is not selected for programming, we do not refund submission fees.

When will I be notified as to whether my VR film has been selected for programming?
All submitters will be notified of their accepted or rejected status by 6pm ACST, Friday 11 August 2017.
Notification will be via email.

If I’m selected for the program, in what format does ADL Film Fest need to receive my film?
If your film is selected to be screened at ADL Film Fest 2017 then you will need to liaise with the ADL Film Fest team to determine the best format for your project.

Submitted Materials
The materials and films may be transferred to the archives of the Adelaide Film Festival, for the sole purpose of documentation and research. They will not be used for any commercial purposes, to protect the interests of the authors and producers.
