DRESS UP FOR THE DRESSMAKER

This year’s most stylish comedy-drama is The Dressmaker, directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse (How to Make an American Quilt).

Based on the bestselling novel by Rosalie Ham, it’s a bittersweet film set in 1950s Australia, starring Kate Winslet as seamstress Tilly Dunnage. After working in Paris, Tilly returns to her hometown of Dungatar to right the wrongs of the past. Armed with her sewing machine, Tilly transforms the women of the town and gets sweet revenge on those who did her wrong.

Kate Winslet is joined by a host of world-class Australian co-stars, including Liam Hemsworth, Judy Davis, Hugo Weaving, and Adelaide homegirl Sarah Snook (Holding the Man).

Visually sumptuous, the film was shot by legendary cinematographer Don McAlpine: the man behind the camera on Moulin Rouge, Romeo + Juliet and many more.

The character Tilly was dressed to impress by the marvelous Margot Wilson, whose work is on show in such Australian cinematic staples as Bran Nue Dae, Jindabyne and Lantana. Emmy-nominated and AACTA-winning costume designer Marion Boyce created the authentic period costume designs for the rest of the cast (including vintage corsetry for all the ladies).
