Craig Ruddy: Gulpilil Exhibition + My Name is Gulpilil Screening
The Adelaide Film Festival is excited to be co-presenting a new art exhibition of Archibald-winning artist Craig Ruddy, as part of the inaugural AFF Youth 2021 program. Powerful and vulnerable, Craig Ruddy: Gulpilil is an eclectic collection of Craig Ruddy’s portraits of David Gulpilil that reflects a multitude of David’s character, including his vulnerability whilst recently going through medical treatment. The exhibition ranges from the larger than life, public and defiant 2004 Archibald Prize-winning Two Worlds (its first public showing in 17 years) to intimate offscreen portraits of the screen legend. These later works were created over several years after artist and actor met again in Gulpilil’s Murray’s Bridge home. The portraits reflect the delicate transition as Gulpilil faces life and mortality – doing it, as always, his own way.
Also in the AFF Youth program are two screenings of the acclaimed documentary My Name is Gulpilil. Tickets purchased for either screening (details below) allows access to the exhibition, providing a complementary and thought-provoking insight into the minds of two Australian artists at the peak of their fields.
Dates: Tues 27 July – Thurs 30 Sept, 10am – 5pm
Venue: Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institution
Tickets: Entry FREE via prior booking with Tandanya, or with a My Name is Gulpilil screening or Craig Ruddy: Artist Talk ticket (see below)
Feature Documentary My Name is Gulpilil
Testament to a legend.
Actor, dancer, singer, painter, storyteller and national treasure: David Gulpilil was born a prodigious talent. In 1971, his big screen debut in Walkabout thrust the boy from Arnhem Land onto the world’s stage at Cannes, and launched what would become a fifty-year career. Adopting a fluid, patient approach to the biographical doc, director Molly Reynolds (Another Country, 2015) weaves an expressionistic response to Gulpilil’s iconic body of work, splicing archival interviews and performances in such a way to place young David in conversation with the man today – living with lung cancer, a rap sheet, and the side effects of time spent away from country, under the spotlight. My Name is Gulpilil is a powerful permanent record of Gulpilil’s totality.
