Artist Archie Moore to be part of AFF 2024

Artist Archie Moore announced as the 2024 Adelaide Film Festival and Samstag Moving Image Commission

Archie Moore (Kamilaroi/Bigambul) will present a new moving image work for an exhibition at Samstag with the Adelaide Film Festival in 2024. Moore’s commission and associated exhibition will follow the artist’s eagerly anticipated showing at the prestigious Venice Biennale next March.

Moore has proposed a large-scale installation reproducing his childhood bedroom. The seventh iteration of the installation series, Dwelling, this ongoing investigation of memory and effects of colonisation draws on visual, auditory, haptic and olfactory elements in its staging.

Erica Green, Director, Samstag Museum of Art: “We could not be more thrilled to be working with pre-eminent contemporary artist Archie Moore. We wanted to establish a generous commission, one that could offer artists time to develop a work of substance. It’s been an honour to work closely with Archie over the past two years on his forthcoming work and to anticipate how this ambitious project will be realised in the gallery.”

Mat Kesting, Director AFF: “The Adelaide Film Festival’s partnership with Samstag Museum of Art has enabled some of this country’s finest moving image artists to have the time and space to create truly groundbreaking art.  We are honoured to be assisting Archie Moore, through this commission, to add his new large-scale installation addition to Dwelling to take its place amongt this fine group of artists.”

Archie Moore: “My [childhood] bedroom door to the outside wouldn’t lock and there were many holes in the fibro walls and doors. One of these holes provided some escapism when I noticed a flipped moving image on the adjacent wall - a mini camera obscura; a little bit of magic from the poverty.”

Established in 2007, the Adelaide Film Festival/Samstag Moving Image Commissions have over the past fifteen years made a significant impact and contribution to the development and presentation of moving image practice.  Commissions have included Warwick Thornton (Stranded, 2011), Lynette Wallworth (Duality of Light, 2009) Daniel Crooks (Pan No. 11, 2013) and Hossein Valamanesh (Crossroads, 2015). The Adelaide Film Festival/Samstag Commission series along with commissions from the Australian Centre for Moving Image will be celebrated in a Perimeter Press publication ‘Outside the Frame: Art and the Moving Image’, to be launched later this year.
