AFFIF Film Lesbian Space Princess Announced for Berlinale 2025
Berlin Film Festival has unveiled its 2025 Panorama lineup, including AFF Investment Fund title Lesbian Space Princess.
Berlinale's Panorama is an audience favourite, traditionally screening "explicitly queer, explicitly feminist, explicitly political – and at the same time seeks to think beyond these categories - always looking for what is new, daring, unconventional and wild in today’s cinema."
The 2025 edition of Berlinale will mark the first under new artistic director Tricia Tuttle. The Panorama lineup comprises eight world premieres and three feature film debuts from 18 countries.
South Australian film Lesbian Space Princess was written and directed by Emma Hough Hobbs and Leela Varghese and was selected for the inaugural Adelaide Film Festival x Cannes initiative in 2024 which connected local producers and directors and their projects to the global film market, the Cannes Marche du Film. The film was also presented in the AFFIF strand during the 2024 Adelaide Film Festival.
An animated comedy like no other, Lesbian Space Princess is a riotous, candy-coloured joy from start to finish: a locally made animation by emerging creatives that embraces LGBTQIA+ and culturally diverse voices, on and off-screen.
Also making waves internationally are AFF 2024 titles Emilia Pérez and Anora, which have been sweeping up this award season. Sean Baker's Anora took out Best International Independent Film at the British Independent Film Awards, Best Picture, Best Lead Performance (Mikey Madison) and Best Supporting Performance (Yura Borisov) at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards, and has been nominated for five Golden Globes, including Best Director and Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy.
Emilia Pérez has been shortlisted for six Academy Awards including, Best Sound, Best Makeup and Hairstyling and Best International Feature Film. The films joins AFF 2024 titles Black Box Diaries, Dahomey, No Other Land, Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat, The Seed of the Sacred Fig, The Girl with the Needle, Blitz, The Brutalist, The Room Next Door, Piece by Piece, and A Crab in the Pool on the list.
