Adelaide Film Festival Sneak Peak – More Films On Sale

Ahead of the announcement of its full program later this month on September 17, the Adelaide Film Festival (AFF) has today given a further sneak peak of this year’s festival announcing four new films and other highlights.

Anora, winner of the Cannes Film Festival 2024 Palme d’Or Award for best film, is a thrilling tragicomedy that reimagines Pretty Woman and cements director Sean Baker as a cinematic master.  It screens at AFF on Thursday October 24.

The Opening Weekend Gala on Friday October 25 is the premiere presentation of the Cannes prize-winning Emilia Pérez, directed by Jacques Audiard. The Cannes Film Festival Best Actress prize was awarded to the ensemble cast of this gritty, exhilarating musical-drama, Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldaña and Karla Sofía Gascón. The screening will be followed by a party that Adelaide won’t forget. AFF has joined forces with our friends at LA BOMBA, bringing together Mexican dancers, roving entertainers, Latin DJs, food and drinks for this special not to be missed occasion that will be the most memorable start to any weekend.

AFF will host the World Premiere of With or Without You. Funded with the support of the trail-blazing Adelaide Film Festival Investment Fund, With or Without You is inspired by writer/director Kelly Schilling’s own experiences and tells a moving story about a young woman, her alcoholic mother and a West African man who find themselves on an unexpected road trip that leads to emotional transformation.

With or Without You stars Marta Dusseldorp, Melina Vidler and Albert Mwangi will be AFF guests and will walk the red carpet alongside their writer/director Kelly Schilling.

The previously announced Opening Night Gala, World Premiere presentation of The Correspondent, which tells the true story of Peter Greste’s imprisonment in Egypt in 2013, will be followed the following evening (6pm, Thursday October 24) by an In Conversation with the film’s director Kriv Stenders (Red Dog, Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan), actors Richard Roxburgh and Julian Maroun and the film’s producer and former journalist Carmel Travers at Adelaide’s Capri Cinema.

While taking you behind the scenes on the making of the film - and expanding on Greste’s own life-changing experiences in Cairo - the panelists will also explore and explain the very real and constant threat facing journalists around the world in their pursuit of the truth, in the face of rapidly shifting power dynamics. This very special event is sure to dig into some of the most pressing issues of our time and the creation of a fascinating film that is certain to be one of the highlights of AFF 2024.

Returning in 2024 is the AFF Youth Schools Screening Day (Wednesday October 30). Featuring climate activism documentary Future Council, coming-of-age feature film Young Hearts and selected shorts from the AFF Youth Filmmaking Competition, AFF Youth Schools Screening Day at Palace Nova Cinemas is a chance for students to build their film language and cultural understanding by engaging with hand-picked premier films for young people alongside work by their peers.

As part of the day there will also be a pathway talk from young South Australian filmmakers and the training sector, and a hands-on workshop and campus tour presented by Flinders University. Schools are encouraged to book your school excursions to attend.

AFF has also announced a special Australian Premiere screening during Adelaide Fashion Week, on October 11, of Dust to Dust, a documentary about Yuima Nakazato, the second Japanese designer invited to Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week, known for his ethereal designs and dressing music stars such as Lady Gaga. Nakazato is driven to merge his artistic vision with green technology and the film charts the creation of his new collection, starting in the landfills of Kenya, where he plans a radical reimagining of fashion.  The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with local designers working in sustainable fashion.

The screening is at Palace Nova Eastend with a red carpet at 6pm and film to commence at 6.30pm.
