A Look Back At The Work Of Radha Mitchell, Star of 'Celeste'
Radha Mitchell is one of Australia’s most recognisable faces. She's starred opposite Hollywood superstars like Denzel Washington, Vin Diesel, Kate Winslet and Johnny Depp. Before the South Australian Premiere of her latest film, Celeste, we thought it would be fitting to explore five of her most memorable performances.
Silent Hill
Opposite Sean Bean (The Lord of the Rings), Mitchell starred as the film’s protagonist, Rose Da Silva, in the 2006 video game adaptation of Silent Hill. The terrifying horror movie grossed over $100 million worldwide, making it one of the most successful video game films ever made. The film received universal acclaim for its visuals, set designs, and atmosphere.
Pitch Black
Pitch Black was the first instalment in the widely successful Riddick franchise. In it, Mitchell starred as Carolyn Fry, a docking pilot for the commercial transport ship Hunter-Gratzner. The movie grossed a whopping $53 million worldwide, against a budget of $23 million. The movie was nominated for the Best Science Fiction Film at the 2000 Saturn Awards. Pitch Black has gained a cult following over the years, which resulted in two successful sequels.
Man on Fire
Directed by Top Gun’s Tony Scott, Man on Fire featured an incredibly impressive ensemble including Denzel Washington, Christopher Walken, Mickey Rourke, Dakota Fanning and, of course, Radha Mitchell. The actress starred as Lisa Ramos, the mother of Fanning’s character. One of the actress’ most successful features, Man on Fire received a positive reception from critics, and grossed an impressive $130 million worldwide.
Finding Neverland
Perhaps Mitchell’s most successful movie, Finding Neverland told the story of Sir J.M. Barrie, and his friendship with a family who inspired him to create Peter Pan. Mitchell was seen on-screen opposite Hollywood legends such as Dustin Hoffman, Kate Winslet, Julie Christie and Johnny Depp. In the film, Mitchell played Mary Barrie, the wife of Depp’s J.M. Barrie. In addition to grossing over $110 million worldwide, Finding Neverland was nominated for Best Picture at the 2005 Academy Awards.
Phone Booth
Opposite Colin Farrell, Forest Whitaker, Katie Holmes and Kiefer Sutherland, Mitchell starred in Joel Schumacher’s surprise box office hit, Phone Booth. In the film, Mitchell played Farrell’s wife, Kelly Shepard. The movie received an extremely positive response from critics, and audiences alike. In the film, a mysterious, hidden sniper calls a phone booth. When a young publicist in the phone booth answers the phone, he quickly finds his life is at risk.
