Lynette Wallworth’s Groundbreaking VR Project Collisions Nominated For International Emmy® Award

28 July 2017

COLLISIONS, a bold and unique Virtual Reality screen project by visionary Australian artist and filmmaker Lynette Wallworth has been nominated for a prestigious International Emmy® Award in the Outstanding New Approaches to Documentary section.

Lynette Wallworth a HIVE alumni was selected as the inaugural artist of the Sundance Institute New Frontier | Jaunt VR Residency Program and COLLISONS, funded with the support of the Adelaide Film Festival Fund, was the first project to be created as part of the program.

COLLISIONS is a highly emotional journey to the homeland of indigenous elder Nyarri Nyarri Morgan and the Martu people in the remote Western Australian Pilbara desert. Nyarri’s first contact with western culture came in the 1950’s via a dramatic collision between his traditional world view and the cutting edge of Western science and technology when he witnessed firsthand and with no context, an atomic test. Now the most cutting edge, innovative technology allows the viewer to join Nyarri Nyarri Morgan in an unprecedented way, by the fire, where he intimately shares the story that he has been waiting to tell.

COLLISIONS had a simultaneous world premiere at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival New Frontiers programme and at the World Economic Forum in Davos, its Australian premiere season was in the ADL Film Fest’s 2016 Rogue program with filmmaker Lynette Wallworth, Nyarri Nyarri Morgan, his wife Nola Taylor, grandson Curtis Taylor who narrates the film with Wallworth, and producer Nicole Newnham all in attendance.

Following COLLISIONS’ world premiere in 2016, Wallworth was awarded a Sundance/Skoll Stories of Change Impact Award, was named as one of Foreign Policy magazine’s 100 Leading Global Thinkers of the year and, representing her body of work, a UNESCO City of Film Award and the Byron Kennedy Award for Innovation and Excellence.

“I am thrilled. This acknowledgment from the Emmy’s selection committee re innovation in the form of documentary will only help to capitalize on what has been an amazing trajectory for COLLISIONS and, at the very heart of it, for Nyarri’s important story, which deserves to be heard by the widest possible audience, both national and international,” Lynette Wallworth said.

Cementing ADL Film Fest’s reputation at the forefront of screen culture innovation – the first Australian festival to introduce an international competition and the first to invest directly in film production – in 2017 the festival launched an International Virtual Reality Award in partnership with the Australian Film, Television & Radio School (AFTRS) that will debut at the 2017 ADL Film Fest in October.

The ADL Film Fest’s VR Lounge, launched two years ago, will this year will be showcased alongside ADL Film Fest’s new sister event Hybrid World Adelaide, an interactive tech based event for the digitally curious and the screen obsessed.

ADL Film Fest’s CEO and Artistic Director Amanda Duthie said “This International Emmy nomination is testament to Lynette Wallworth’s ability to tell the most extraordinary stories in the most innovative way. Adelaide Film Festival has funded an incredible array of Lynette’s work – Tender, Rekindling Venus: In Plain Sight, Duality of Light, and of course, the unparalleled VR project COLLISIONS. We are proud to have been on this journey with her.”

The International Emmys will be presented in New York on Thursday 5 October, coinciding with Opening Night of the 2017 ADL Film Fest.

COLLISIONS is produced by Infinite Field with support from the World Economic Forum, the Sundance Institute, the MacArthur Foundation, the Skoll Foundation, the Ford Foundation, the Fledgling Fund, the Pritzker Foundation, the Omidyar Network, the Australia Council for the Arts, and the Adelaide Film Festival Fund, in partnership with Jaunt VR.
