A woman pushed to the edge.

The strain of living in the margins creates the unlikeliest of criminals in this unflinching drama inspired by real events. Aging midwife, Mira (Dorota Pomykala), suffering a deep malaise brought on by an uncaring family and a broader society. Her awakening results in an unexpected behaviour, which breaks her family and life apart. The fallout is the unsettling core of the film, where supposed support networks fail, and Mira is left entirely alone to sift through the reasons for her actions and their consequences. Crafting imagery with a clinical beauty and nurturing a quietly heroic performance, writer/director Anna Jadowska has taken a defiant stand against still-entrenched attitudes towards women.

“Stark and compelling…much of the success of the picture is down to the astounding performance by Pomykala in the lead role. While she radiates pain, confusion and quiet despair, there is also a constant sense of defiance.” (Cineuropa)

“Writer-director Anna Jadowska has done something wonderful…. This is a movie that shows us the impact of a mistake, detailing exactly what drove our mild, quiet heroine to make it, but without letting her avoid responsibility.” (Critic’s Notebook)
