Takin’ music to the streets.
Think you’re up on popular music? Dangdut is the music of the streets in Java, and there is no better introduction than following Ubay, Bewok, Iyus and the rest of their crew as they haul their cart, laden with amps, mics, and instruments through the backstreets of Jakarta, performing their distinctive brand of percussive pop for a fistful of rupiah from bystanders. When Ubay decides to up their game by recording an album, he calls in an old friend, Didiet, whose studio gives grunge a whole new meaning. But something wonderful emerges in the act of creation, as the band must overcome obstacles of breaking in a new singer and breaking their computer, in the pursuit of their own big break. A standout at the Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival; a celebration of creative process and artistic determination.
This film is co-presented in partnership with the Adelaide Festival Centre’s OzAsia Festival
