“An effervescent mother-daughter dramedy spanning decades, continents and cultures.” (The Hollywood Reporter)

The definition of a crowd-pleaser, The Persian Version is a cross-generational, cross-cultural dramedy where each frame bounces with a joyous vibrancy. Iranian-American Leila (Layla Mohammadi) is a misfit in both her opposing cultures. A divorced lesbian filmmaker in New York, she has an uneasy relationship with her eight brothers and disapproving mother, Shireen (Niousha Noor). When Leila falls pregnant from a rare heterosexual fling, she struggles to balance her family and personal lives. But after another family secret comes to light, she uncovers uncanny parallels within her own life and her mother’s journey from Iran to America. Directed with a breezily hip, colourful style filled with pop dance numbers and fourth-wall breaking asides, Maryam Keshavarz has made a moving and funny celebration of mothers and daughters.

“The film’s infectious, fizzy energy is hard to resist.” (The Hollywood Reporter)

“A funny, soulful journey across language and time that also offers an illuminating look at the complexities of motherhood and identity.” (Huffington Post)

“A visually colourful and vibrant celebration of how immigrant families traverse two cultures only to find that the real divides are often within our own families.” (Chicago Reader)
