“A hilarious, razor-sharp portrait of the worst person in the world” (The Playlist)
This jet black twisted Norwegian comedy of manners skewers this literally toxic relationship as well as our own self-important impulses. Signe (Kristine Kujath Thorp) is a protagonist with what TikTok refers to as Main Character Syndrome: a narcissistic orchestrator of dramatic events to ensure she is the centre of attention. She and her equally vain artist boyfriend, Thomas (Eirik Sæther) engage in a series of one-upping and belittling each other to gain social cred and self-satisfaction, until Thomas’ career starts taking off and Signe’s life starts looking increasingly diminished. In an attempt to wrest back control, she starts abusing Russian pharmaceuticals until she develops a severe, unique illness so she can harvest sympathy and nurture her own celebrity.
“Signe may have an outsized perception of her own significance, and a breathtaking willingness to do whatever it takes to make sure everyone else sees it too. But she’s not wrong that her story feels like a reflection of our current image-obsessed era. To the contrary — that’s what makes it such a vicious little treat to enjoy.” (Hollywood Reporter)
“For anyone who’s watched a partner realise their dreams, a trusted colleague get promoted, or a friend become famous, and curdled with jealousy and resentment, Kristoffer Borgli has made the film for you.” (The Playlist)
