Testament to a legend

Actor, dancer, singer, painter, storyteller and national treasure: David Gulpilil was born a prodigious talent. In 1971, his big screen debut in Walkabout thrust the boy from Arnhem Land onto the world’s stage at Cannes, and launched what would become a fifty-year career. Adopting a fluid, patient approach to the biographical doc, director Molly Reynolds (Another Country, 2015) weaves an expressionistic response to Gulpilil’s iconic body of work, splicing archival interviews and performances in such a way to place young David in conversation with the man today – living with lung cancer, a rap sheet, and the side effects of time spent away from country, under the spotlight. My Name is Gulpilil is a powerful permanent record of Gulpilil’s totality.
