“...a film that’s filled to the brim with ideas and social critiques” (Hollywood Reporter)
Saeed Roustaee’s sweeping family epic won widespread acclaim at Cannes this year. It tells of an Iranian family caught in the downward spiral brought on economic sanctions. Holding the family together is Leila (Asghar Farhadi regular Taraneh Alidoosti) who formulates a plan to start a business that would save them from poverty. Yet her ideas flounder on the rocks of a patriarchal system where her father is angling to take over the clan leadership, and where corruption has become endemic. As the rich tapestry of sub-plots moves to a conclusion, the actions of each character will gradually lead the family one step closer to implosion.
“Like a massive 19th century novel by Zola or Dickens… …it’s a great movie both in scope and in what it’s trying to say about Iran through the story of one family’s countless hardships.” (Hollywood Reporter)
“Iranian film-maker Saeed Roustayee delivers a big, absorbing, character-driven family drama” (The Guardian)
“This subtle, convincing emotional tour-de-force… with brio to spare and without ever preaching, the layered conundrum here reminds viewers that it is ordinary people who suffer most when their country is a pariah on the world stage.” (Screen Daily)
