Victor Fleming (1889-1949) is credited as director on The Wizard of Oz, although Richard Thorpe, George Cukor and King Vidor also directed parts. Fleming started his film career as a cinematographer but graduated to directing in 1919, where his work on Douglas Fairbanks’ silent films won him a reputation as an action director. Signing with MGM he directed some of that studio’s most prestigious films including Bombshell (1933) Captains Courageous (1937), Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1941) and A Guy Named Joe (1943). He is the credited director for Gone with the Wind (1939) though several other directors also worked on the film.
