Marcelo Gomes

Marcelo Gomes was born in Recife, Brazil, where he started his career as a programmer at a film club. He is an award-winning film director, screenwriter and visual artist.

His debut film, Cinema, Aspirinas e Urubus (Cinema, Aspirins and Vultures), screened at Cannes (Un Certain Regard) in 2005 and received France’s National Education Prize. His feature film Viajo Porque Preciso, Volto Porque Te Amo (I Travel Because I Have to, I Come Back Because I Love You), which he co-directed with Karim Aïnouz, premiered at Venice (Orizzonti) in 2009. His historical biopic Joaquim was selected in 2017 for the Competition in the Berlinale. His doc Estou me guardando pra quando o carnival chegar (Waiting for the Carnival) was released in the Berlinale in 2019 and was selected for the masters program of IDFA (International Documentary Film Festival of Amsterdam).
