The Adelaide Film Festival (ADL Film Fest), counting down to the Oct 27 – 30 AFF GOES ROGUE 2016 event, today announced its official Rogues Gallery, a lively line-up of guests set to add some serious spark to Australian cinema in 2016.
Also announced is the Closing Night screening, which sees some of the world’s most lovable rock’n’roll rogues, The Stooges, take to the screen in Jim Jarmusch’s GIMME DANGER, a film that will leave audiences screaming for an encore, which they will be delivered when the ADLFF returns, full throttle, in 2017.
Be there as Australian cinema breaks new ground as the country’s first Muslim rom-com, ALI’S WEDDING, hits the big screen for its Gala World Premiere screening and after-party on Friday 28 October, with Ali’s Wedding cast and crew there to laugh, cry and rejoice alongside you. Joining the festive celebrations of this life affirming film will be the creator, writer and star, Osamah Sami, lead actress Helena Sawires, co-writer Andrew Knight (Sami and Knight on Friday won an AWGIE Award for the film), director Jeffrey Walker (Jack Irish, Modern Family, Angry Boys, Dance Academy), producer Sheila Jayadev, and legendary cinematographer Don McAlpine (The Dressmaker, Moulin Rouge).
An Adelaide Film Festival Fund film, ALI’S WEDDING tells the story of Ali, the charming son of a Muslim cleric, and his hilarious attempts to balance the expectations of his community with his heart in the lead up to his wedding day. “Most of the film, if not all of it, is based on real life”, says Osamah Sami. “Almost every event that you see in the film happened…I don’t know how, but it did happen.”
Pre-wedding celebrations include a special In Conversation event with Andrew Knight on Friday 28 October. Explore his life and work, at this special time in an already outstanding career, while this legendary writer is receiving Oscar® buzz.
Audiences are also invited to be the envy of cinephiles the world over, and join Australia’s most revered film critic, David Stratton, both in person and on screen, for his personal journey through the Australian cinematic landscape in a special ‘Work In Progress’ screening of the highly anticipated DAVID STRATTON’S STORIES OF AUSTRALIAN CINEMA. The world premiere screening on Saturday 29 October and the Sunday 30th Oct screening and in conversation event will be attended by David Stratton, director Sally Aitken and producer Jo-anne McGowan.
From the Midnight Projections premiere at the Cannes Film Festival to the AFF Goes Rogue Closing Night on Sunday 30 October, Jim Jarmusch’s new film GIMME DANGER chronicles the story of The Stooges, one of the greatest rock-n-roll bands of all time. GIMME DANGER presents the context of the Stooges emergence musically, culturally, politically, historically, and relates their adventures and misadventures while charting their inspirations and the reasons behind their initial commercial challenges, as well as their long-lasting legacy.

Written by Osamah Sami together with Andrew Knight (Hacksaw Ridge, SeaChange) ALI’S WEDDING tells the story of the charming son of a Muslim cleric, who, after a reckless lie, sets off a catastrophic (and hilarious) chain of events. Ali finds himself caught between his sense of duty to his family and following his heart. Osamah Sami stars in the title role of Ali, joined by Don Hany (Healing, Lucky Miles), Frances Duca and featuring a standout performance by newcomer Helena Sawires in the role of Ali’s feisty love interest.

One of Australia’s most revered film critics, David Stratton takes the audience on his own personal journey through the cinematic landscape that shaped both him and us as he traces the story of Australian cinema. The series interweaves the cinematic visions of our greatest films and their filmmakers, telling intimate behind-the-scenes stories through the voices of iconic stars and industry protagonists. It also encompasses David Stratton’s parallel Australian journey, as he becomes deeply enmeshed in this nation’s cinema – from his first thrilling glimpse of the Australian film The Overlanders, when he was 10, to his arrival as a Ten Pound Pom and finally to his becoming a household name in his adoptive country and a renowned authority on an art form that has defined the twentieth century. Using unique archive footage and memorable moments from the films themselves, the series focuses on some of our deepest preoccupations via the many and wonderfully varied depictions of ourselves onscreen. It’s through Australian films that David comes to understand his new home and himself, as his country forges its own identity on the silver screen.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary next year, Lucky Miles retains every ounce of political contention it had upon its first release. Produced through the ADL Film Fest Fund and starring Osamah Sami (in what was his first ever big screen appearance), Don Hany and Rodney Afif from Ali’s Wedding, this is the story of refugees abandoned in the ruggedly handsome Pilbara desert. Returning to the Mercury Cinema for one night only.

Adelaide Film Festival and the Art Gallery of South Australia together present the Australian Premiere of artist Lynette Wallworth’s bold new VR screen project COLLISIONS, a stunning, deeply poetic and immersive live‐action/animated experience, from October 5 to October 30, 2016. The world’s oldest culture collides with the vanguard of VR tech, as Martu elder Nyarri Nyarri Morgan shares the story he’s been waiting half a century to tell.

The inaugural recipient of the Jim Bettison and Helen James Award, Greg Mackie will to present and discuss the innovative work that the Award has enabled him to pursue. Mackie has been researching and working towards the establishment of a ‘Thinking Adelaide’ global network of innovators and thought leaders, which aims to enhance Adelaide’s national and international standing as a promoter and crucible of new thinking.
During this event the recipients of the second annual Jim Bettison and Helen James Award will be acknowledged. Two bold and innovative individuals, Adventurer and Environmental Scientist Tim Jarvis and leading Australian dancer and choreographer Meryl Tankard, both take the honour of being a recipient of this prestigious award in 2016.
