Besties and beasties
Described by Screen Daily as “an all-girl fairy tale” this debut feature from Deborah Haywood had the rare honour of being named opening film for Critics’ Week at Venice. Iona and her mum Lyn are a pair of outsiders, clinging to each other and to the fragile little bubbles of brightly coloured cuteness with which they surround themselves. Iona starts at a new school where she desperately wants to fit in, and she throws herself into the social world of her teenage girl peer group. What could possibly go wrong?
Deborah Haywood is a British director whose short films include Lady Margaret (2007), Sis (2011), Biatch! (2011) and Twinkle, Twinkle (2013). Pin Cushion is her feature debut.
