2013 Adelaide Film Festival Program Launched Today

29 August 2013

Premier Jay Weatherill today officially launched the 2013 Adelaide Film Festival – which will bring more than 148 films from Australia and 48 countries to screens all across Adelaide for eleven days in October.

In its tenth year and sixth festival, running from October 10-20, the 2013 Adelaide Film Festival promises something for everyone, as it showcases the best of Australian and internationally produced films, across a variety of screens including cinema, television, hand-held devices and gallery installations.

New work from Australian directors Rolf de Heer, Warwick Thornton, John Curran, Sophie Hyde, Eddie Martin, Sophia Turkiewicz, Wayne Blair and Rowan Woods lead the Australian feature selections, joining premiere films and documentaries from countries including East Timor, Chile, India, Iran, Japan, Romania, Russia, Sweden, South Korea and Turkey.

The Festival will expand its program and audience reach as it extends outside 5000 to Goodwood, Port Adelaide, Elizabeth, Mount Barker, Leabrook, McLaren Vale, Mt Gambier, Port Pirie, Noarlunga, Goolwa and Whyalla as well as its traditional city locations.

The Adelaide Film Festival also pays respect to the outdoor big-screen as it takes over the Adelaide Showground for a one-night-only City Drive-In double bill spectacular.

This year Adelaide Film Festival opens a Festival Club, taking over Little Miss Mexico & Little Miss Miami (cnr Grenfell & Frome Streets). It will be the meeting place for screen worshippers over the 11-day festival. The full Festival Club program will be announced mid-September.

Mr Weatherill said the Adelaide Film Festival was renowned for its premiere screenings and had grown into an established highlight of the city’s cultural calendar.

“We want Adelaide’s festival atmosphere to extend throughout the year and the Adelaide Film Festival in October is one of the great events helping to provide that year-round buzz,” he said.

Festival Chair Sandra Sdraulig today welcomed Channel 9 Adelaide as principal partner: “Channel 9 Adelaide delivers outstanding content on the small screen and we are delighted to be working with them to present audiences with a diverse and exciting program on big screens, small screens and everything in between.”

Amanda Duthie, Festival Director and CEO said today: “The 2013 Adelaide Film Festival is a hand-picked collection of the finest films both Australian-made and international, with a diversity of content that will challenge, entertain, terrify, surprise and delight audiences.

“Screen Worship is the touchstone for the content offerings – we want to celebrate the collective experience of seeing work in a darkened cinema as well as acknowledge work that you can experience in the palm of your hand. Adelaide Film Festival encompasses everything from the nostalgia of the outdoor Drive-In experience and the small but perfectly formed 24-seat Mini-Regent Cinema, to gallery spaces and the realm of augmented reality and 3D. And then of course there is Sharnado.

With a total of 34 projects, South Australian films stand strong in the program demonstrating the muscle of the local industry, a strong diversity of story and narrative approach and a celebration of local characters and history.“
